George Sibley (1782-1863) was an American explorer, Indian agent, politician, and entrepreneur. He was born in Massachusetts and later moved to Missouri where he became a prominent figure in the early history of the state.
Sibley was appointed as the Indian agent for the Osage Nation in 1811 and played a key role in negotiating treaties with various Native American tribes in the region. He also served as a delegate to the Missouri Constitutional Convention in 1820 and helped draft the state's first constitution.
In addition to his government service, Sibley was involved in various business ventures, including trading along the Santa Fe Trail and operating lead mines in Missouri. He was also a founding member of the Missouri Historical Society and actively promoted the development of St. Louis as a major trading hub.
Sibley's contributions to the economic and political development of Missouri were significant, and he is remembered as a key figure in the early history of the state. He passed away in 1863 at the age of 81.
